Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
