Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
