British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
